STAVE SHELLS: Wood used to build stave shells is in a more natural form than ply drum shells or steam bent shells because the staves are solid -- no plies or stress from bending. The grain pattern is vertical which puts the bearing edge on the end grain rather than running parallel with the grain. This gives the edge more strength to stay true longer -- giving you better sounding drums longer. These shells have exponentially less glue and more wood compared to a ply shell. Because of this, you have a superior musical instrument that has a FAR greater dynamic and tuning range. We buy our shells from Joshua Tree Percussion. For more pics see our gallery

SEGMENT SHELLS: Segment shells are another superior drum shell design and have been a GREAT addition to Hard Bop Drums. These are similar to stave shells in that they have far more wood and less glue than ply shells, but offer a different tone to stave shells. We love both methods and build about 50% stave and 50% segment shell kits and snares. There are quite a few other companies making snares from these shells, but we at Hard Bop Drums are offering them at a greater discount. Hard Bop is one of the few companies that is making complete kits from segment shells in the US. For more pics see our gallery

KELLER "VINTAGE" SHELLS: These are a new shell offered by the world famous Keller Drum shell company. They are made from a combination of mahogany and poplar with maple reinforcement hoops. These were made to be similar to the shells made by the great old drum companies from the 40s through the 60s like WFL, Slingerland, Ludwig and more. They are much warmer sounding than standard maple ply shells. When we put triple flanged hoops on them they sound very much like the drums from the companies above and when fitted with die cast hoops, they sound like a Gretsch drum, but more warm sounding. For more pics see our gallery

HARD BOP GRETSCH REFURBISHING SERVICE: Hard Bop Drums also specializes in selling refurbished Gretsch kits and does restoration work on Gretsch drums. Please check out some of the kits in the gallery & for any quotes.
